  • What are those letters after your name? CD(DONA)?

I am often asked this not only by potential clients, but healthcare professionals, family members, and to be honest even strangers who want to know about my credentials. What does it take to be a doula? Did you have to go to school or college? Can anyone be a doula? How do I get started? The answer is somewhat alarming. Yes, anyone can be a doula, anyone can also call themselves a doula! A person can be a bank teller one day or a barista at your local Starbucks and wake up the next morning and ...

The following is a guest blog post by an IDA preferred provider, Brandi Wood, CPM - DEM, CCE, CD of Home4Birth, central Indiana's home birth midwives:  Doulas are amazing!  I am often asked... we are already hiring a midwife why would we need a doula also? Midwives and doulas roles may overlap at times.   Both Midwives and Doulas are professionals and we both work to support the family unit as a whole. Dou-Wha?

say what webWe get this a lot: "What do you do for a living?" "I'm a doula." "A dou-wha?" Although doulas in the modern sense have been around for well over 20 years, many people have never heard of one. Indeed, the word doula is very old: it comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves."  Today, the term is used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and just after birth.

Here at Indy Doula Associates, we often describe a doula as your pregnancy travel agent - we guide you through your labor and birth. We have mapped out and been on many trips through "labor land." We know where all the potholes are, every detour, the best pit stops and how to keep you comfortable and focused during those long bumpy trails. We will hold your hand and remind you what you are feeling and doing is normal, even if it is difficult, and at the same time we will protect your birth space as you undertake your powerful journey. We do all of this and more as we help mothers and their partners to experience:

  • more self-confidence
  • secure and cared for
  • shorter labors
  • fewer complications
  • greater success with breastfeeding

When I decided to hire a doula for the home birth of my first child, it was in my mind expressly for insurance against "if things got bad." After two hours of hard pushing, the midwife wanted to transfer to the hospital for forceps because she was afraid the baby "was stuck in there tight and not coming down at all." I was devastated. If not for Linda speaking up and saying there were some moves we could try to reposition the baby, we would have had no other option. We agreed to try the moves (inversion/rebozo/some hip release thing) and immediately the location of the contraction pain changed. We went back to pushing and although it did ultimately take a long time to give birth, the midwife said I was now moving baby down and so she let me keep going. Linda's photos (approximately 80) were awesome - no nudity or graphic shots. We will cherish them always. When I was in transition, she calmly prompted me to change my "I can't" to "I can." There was almost always a cold washcloth on my head. She poured water on my back in the tub - I thought this was my husband at the time... I only found out later how much Linda was involved in my comfort measures since I was in "laborland." Without Linda, I would have had a painful episiotomy/forceps or a C section, as well as the corresponding hospital bills. She was almost all my husband and I discussed for days, how she saved the day for us and ultimately granted me the birth we prepared and hoped for. She was my insurance against things getting bad. They got bad and she was quietly and calmly in our corner, giving us a second option that worked in our situation. The money I spent on her doula services saved me thousands and thousands of dollars in hospital intervention. I asked my hubs if he had anything to add about Linda: "I mean, aside from being a lifesaver? There aren't words to say enough."

When it came to the actual birth, she was beyond amazing. My labor lasted 4 days and she was constantly call and texting my mom for updates the first 2 days. The third day I went to the hospital and it was 2am when we went. She walked the halls with me, and comforted me when I needed it. They sent me home the same day but the next day I was back in and she was there(this was when the blizzard hit at the beginning of February) My mom liked that she did everything for me and all she had to do was watch. I ended up having an emergency C-section but I couldn't have made it that far without her help. She had several different ways help ease the pain and my favorite was the TENS unit....that thing is just amazing!!!!! For anyone interested in having a doula I HIGHLY RECOMMEND LINDA!!!!!!

I was blessed to have two wonderful doulas’ assist me at the birth of my first child. Linda was assisting my primary doula as part of her training. She was AMAZING. Although she is relatively new, she is very knowledgeable about the birth process and techniques to manage pain. She has fantastic bedside manners and was a wonderful comforting presence during my birth. Thank you so much Linda!

She might be fairly new to being a doula, but she's a natural. I would highly recommend Linda to anyone looking for a doula! I wish we had more time together so I could give more insight into her prenatal practices, but I'm sure she's great in that aspect as well. I loved having her there for the birth of our son!

She is extremely knowledgeable and kind, and makes you feel like you can take on any challenge in maintaining a healthy feeding relationship with your baby. She gently helps coach you toward the best outcome and I couldn't recommend her enough.

Unfortunately, our baby was breech and refused to turn, despite our varied efforts - acupuncture, chiropractic manipulations, various exercises from spinningbabies.com, etc.

When it became clear that a cesarean section birth was in our future due to low amounts of amniotic fluid and the baby's position, I talked with Patti and put together a birth plan that incorporated many of our preferences from our natural birth plan, along with preferences that were specific to a c-section.

Patti met us at the hospital and did aromatherapy before the prepping even began. Throughout the prepping time, the aromatherapy helped me stay relaxed and calm. She also had some orange juice for my husband and helped him stay comfortable, as he tends to get nervous in medical situations.

Patti accompanied me to the operating room and did aromatherapy while the anesthesia was administered. She was able to remind the hospital staff about our birth plan preferences, which included keeping the cord long and having skin to skin with the baby minutes after birth. Even though I was still in surgery, I was able to do skin to skin, with assistance from Patti and the nurses. After surgery, Patti stayed to assist with breastfeeding.

I appreciated that Patti took photographs during the c-section and captured the first moments of my daughter’s life. We feel that having Patti there during the c-section was valuable because she advocated for us and served as a liaison between us and the hospital staff. The c-section was definitely more enjoyable and pleasant than I expected. I highly recommend Patti and her services to a couple expecting a baby and encourage couples to consider having a doula present, even if a c-section is the plan.

With a little less than a month before my due date, I stumbled across Patti's profile on doulamatch.net. Right away I knew Patti was the doula for me. Her love and compassion for expecting mothers and their birthing experience could be felt from our initial phone conversation. Unfortunately, my VBAC was derailed when the attending physician felt like a C-section was the best option. Upon finding this out, I was crushed but immediately comforted by Patti. She stayed by my husband and i's side providing words of encouragement and support during the surgery. Having her there made a world of difference!!

When my son was 5 months old, I found out I was expecting again and immediately knew I wanted to try for a VBAC again. The short interval between pregnancies coupled with my previous c-sections, greatly decreased my odds for a successful vaginal birth. Despite all the odds that were against me, Patti fully supported me!! She equipped me with the right tools and knowledge to ensure me that this birthing experience would be different.

In March 2013, I successfully achieved my goal of home birth after two c-sections!! This would not have been possible without the support of Patti. She is truly God sent! I would highly recommend Patti to any expecting mother!

We called her in the middle of the night when labor started and she provided amazing support during the next 24 hours until our baby finally arrived! She helped encourage me during the toughest times of labor and reminded hospital staff of my birth preferences. I do not think I would have been able to achieve my goal of an intervention-free birth without Patti. She consistently goes above and beyond what is expected of her and is truly there for each and every mom she works with. You will not regret using Patti as your doula!

During my pregnancy, she was my sounding board if I had questions after dr. visits, and an ear to listen if something just "didn't feel right." I loved how on top of everything she was, she remembered when I had appointments, and would check in just because. I found that her prenatal check ups were such a blessing. She taught us how to push, which they really don't cover in classes. I think this really helped when it came down to it, baby girl came out in only 13 minutes!

When my water broke, she was our first call. She gave us some "to-dos" and we called her back when it was getting close. She came to the house and helped me labor there before we took off for the hospital. She was such a pro when it came to helping me breathe through my contractions and put away the thought of pain. She knew different positions for me to try to ease any discomfort and get my body ready for delivery.

My husband loved the fact that he could rely on her for ideas, and really be apart of the birth experience. When our daughter finally made her entrance into the world, Patti stayed with us, even after family had gone home. We are so ever grateful that she came into our lives. It is something my sister and I will cherish forever. I would recommend her to anyone.

It's good to be familiar with everything because sometimes what you plan for isn't always how things work out! My body/the baby/my emotion... nothing was quite cooperating with the birth plan I hoped to follow, but I felt more at ease making informed decisions knowing risks and benefits.

Thank you Patti, for being such a fantastic supporter and educator in our baby journey!

I found Patti and after our 1st phone call and in person meeting, I knew I wanted her " on the team." She is gentle, kind, very experienced and connected with all things pregnancy, birth and babies. More importantly she is well versed on the medical side of things while understanding the HUGE spiritual aspect of pregnancy & labor. We met often through the course of my pregnancy, and each time she gently guided me to create the plan that I desired to experience for the labor & delivery of our baby. She never pushed me into corners of theory, but listened to my desires, my anxieties and offered advice and resources that always made me feel safe, peaceful and empowered to believe all would work together. She is great at keeping the end goal in sight = healthy mama, holding healthy baby in her arms ... but is equally diligent about making sure the labor plan that is important to you is sought after with energy and commitment! I am proud to say that with Patti's help and with her literally right our side, we endured 28 hours of labor and successfully soaked up every range of emotion in a beautiful, drug-free VBAC. Most of my labor was at home, and Patti was amazing at making sure the timing was just right to get to the hospital in time to deliver, since this was in my plan .I truly was never nervous knowing that she was watching and keeping careful notes of my labor. My husband loved having her to "direct traffic". She was amazing at the hospital and was great at keeping to plan. May 22nd 2013 -- a holy and sacred experience. We are forever grateful for Patti. You will be too!

Patti was fully available for advice and questions. During the labor and delivery, her help was invaluable. I know for a fact that we would not have made it to the hospital on time had it not been for her. She was able to step in when we needed help, and hang back when Aaron was coaching. She respected our wishes and followed our birth plan. It all went off without a hitch! She even came over late at night a week after the birth to help me when I was having trouble breastfeeding. She assisted us with a new latch and it has been smooth sailing since.

if you are considering hiring a doula, i highly recommend Patti! My husband and I will be forever grateful for her help.

Patti kept in touch throughout the pregnancy (I started my doula search early) and e-mailed, texted and called with information and just checking in. As the time came closer, she helped support us through the heartbreak of risking out of midwifery care and home birth because of my gestational diabetes. She helped remind me that it didn't matter where my child was born - what mattered is a healthy baby and healthy mama. Patti's support and upbeat nature kept my spirits up when they started to sink and was a great support to my husband.

On my birthing day, we kept in touch by phone, until she said "What if I just come over?" :) Her focus was 100% on me and Steve and our baby, even though she had been in a car accident one week earlier and didn't feel well. Patti stayed with us and helped coach me through my birthing waves, encouraged me to keep drinking water and use the restroom and was just *there* - she kept my husband supported and also helped keep in touch with the doctor on the phone. She stayed after the birth for a few hours to make sure that our birth preferences were followed even after the after actual birth had taken place. I'm now looking forward to our postpartum visit so I can read her birth notes and see pictures!

I would recommend Patti to anyone searching for a doula to support their family during childbirth. She's a great person to be around, a great support to have and her energy and passion for birth is infectious. You need Patti for your birth team! I know I sure did!!

Patti made it clear her goal was for me to have the labor I desired, and she would support me no matter what. I knew within a few minutes she was the right person to shepherd my husband and I through our first pregnancy.

During the prenatal period Patti was always available to me. She helped me find a birth class, a chiropractor and massage therapist specializing in prenatal care, and prepare a birth preference list. Several times when I was anxious she called to talk. She also spent a lot of time at my house helping my husband and I prepare for labor.

When my water broke, my husband called her at 2am and she was awake right away. In labor she always seemed to be with me, but later I found out how much else she did - getting me food, advocating for me, taking notes and labor photos. She gave my husband a needed break when emotions overcame him 20 hours in - she never tired. She fed me, suggested positions, helped me get relief in the shower until I could get in the tub, gave me hugs and a place to rest my weary head, pep talked my husband, reminded me that I COULD do this when I was overwhelmed, and was a loving presence to guide my son into this world. She helped with our first breastfeed - much needed due to my exhaustion after 24 hours of labor. The best part is that she did not take over for my husband - she helped guide him in being a more intuitive and effective birth partner. This made him feel very confident during a process that was often difficult for him to watch me go through.

Patti is an amazing doula and I can’t imagine my labor without her. In fact, I think my husband has her on speed dial in case we get pregnant in the future - she will likely be the first call we make so we can reserve our due date!

Patti was randomly assigned to be my doula for my first birth after my initial doula was sick. I planned for a natural birth and the doctor immediately wanted to start me on pit after my water broke and I was not experiencing any contractions. I really would have never had the natural birth experience that I was hoping for without her! For my second birth, I couldn't imagine having anyone else there for me. Her client centric approach comes through in everything she says and does and there is a level of comfort knowing that she has the experience and knowledge to help me through 2 different labor experiences. She was able to provide great resources and exercises ahead of time, provided great advice, especially near the end of my pregnancy, which I believe all helped make my second birth go so much smoother. She was also able to keep my husband engaged so he could provide the support he wanted to. Overall, my experience with Patti couldn't have been better and I would recommend her to anyone!

She was singly responsible for recommending alternative approaches to our medically necessary induction. She was encouraging and knowledgeable and absolutely helped us achieve the natural childbirth that we had dreamed of. I would definitely recommend her services and will continue to do so.

What's not to appreciate about Patti's doula services? Patti exudes a calm, poised professionalism. She is warm and approachable; tactfully sincere. Essential in work that demands quick response time, Patti is prompt and a clear communicator. Patti did a superb job supporting both my husband and I during birth. We were so grateful to have worked with Patti as our doula! I would highly recommend her to anyone!

Patti was my doula for the birth of my third child. I had an unmedicated hospital (land) birth with my first child, but had some concerns about my treatment by the medical staff. My second pregnancy did not go to term. Patti was amazing at being sensitive to my concerns and helping me advocate for myself when I developed some complications at the end of my pregnancy. Her medical training informs her ability to be a coach and guide, which is exactly what I needed for this birth.

Patti is not afraid to help her clients assert for their medical rights, which was much needed in my situation. I achieved the beautiful hospital water birth I envisioned during all of my pregnancies, and have an amazing healthy boy. I'm very grateful for Patti's empathetic ear, quick communications, and one-on-one coaching. I believe all women would benefit from a doula at their birth, and Patti is a credit to the profession!

We went into this labor with very little plan and decided to go with the flow. Even still, this baby gave us lots of surprises. We were past due and had to be induced. This time, labor progressed very forcefully and rapidly. Patti kept me from hyperventelating while I had terrible muscle spasms in my back and leg from posterior positioned baby. I finally opted for an epidural, and of course, Patti reassured me that was okay. She helped me tremendously while the epidural was being placed - as it was difficult for me to remain still and calm with the spasms and contractions. While my husband can be a wonderful support, there's something very helpful about the way a good doula communicates and supports you. Patti was a great coach while pushing, especially due to the fact that I still had partial feeling down my left side. Due to the size and position of baby, even vacuum assistance was not successful in delivering baby. With continually dropping heart rate, my OB called for an emergency C-section. Patti made me feel reassured about the situation. As we had a photographer, and I was only allowed to have two support persons, Patti was very kind and understanding in my decision to have the photographer and my husband with me. She was right there waiting for me when I returned from the procedure. When you’ve always have wanted a natural birth, then find that you really need a lot of medical intervention… it can be emotionally disappointing and overwhelming. But Patti made me feel confident every step of the way. For those reading this who decide they want pain management measures, know that you will still find benefit in having a doula. Patti is so special to our family, and we are grateful to have had her loving kindness for the birth of both of our children.

Not to mention she is extremely good with people and can read you from the get go. At our first consult I told her I wanted to do everything in my power to have a VBAC. Immediately she provided her opinion on some changes I should make to set myself up for success. She never told me what to do, but gave me her thoughts so I could do the research and make the best decisions for myself. Because of Patti's thoughtful guidance I decided to change providers, which also meant switching where I would deliver my baby boy. I also added in massage, acupuncture and hypnobabies to set my mind and body up for success. There were a few moments of pause for me, but Patti was always there to help talk through any situation. Thanks to Patti and the wonderful team I had during my birthing time I successfully delivered my son via VBAC! During my birthing time Patti was so supportive and kept reminding me how powerful my body was and what a good job I was doing. While my husband was of course there and was extremely supportive it felt so reassuring to have Patti with me every step of the way. She never wavered in her position or confidence in me and my body and I am forever grateful! If we decide to have another baby there is no other doula I would want beside me.

When the time finally came to deliver, Patti was very supportive in the L&D room. My son was positioned posteriorly, so she and the nurse put me into a position that helped to turn him. When I didn't think I could continue naturally, she reassured me that my body was making great changes and her words helped me to keep going. I ended up having the natural delivery we had hoped for, and believe Patti helped us to do this. After the delivery, I had trouble emptying my bladder, and she even had the trick to fix that (peppermint oil)! Her labor notes and photos are something I will treasure forever. Patti is supportive, calm, and passionate about being a doula. I highly recommend her for your birth!

Our birth plan was a home water birth; I labored at home for 36 hours with very little progress. Patti was very supportive throughout this long period; she provided cues for snacks, herbal teas, scripts, new positions, walking, baths, etc. She also provided some much needed back massages to ease the back labor I was experiencing.

We transferred to Methodist Hospital due to exhaustion but Patti never left our side. She made the hospital room feel like home as she continued to provide support in every way possible. Our boy was born 12 hours later. Patti stayed for several hours to ensure we had the support we needed postpartum; she felt like part of our family!

Patti also provided excellent photos and a diary of events that my partner and I would never have captured during the chaos. These mean the world to us; it's a way to remember all the details of this miraculous and happy event forever! We felt very luck to have Patti there to provide moral, emotional and physical support!

My husband and I moved to Indy midway through my pregnancy. Being a first-time mom who wanted a natural childbirth, the first thing on my to-do list was to find a doula. When I met with Patti, I knew she would be a great fit and a wonderful resource for our birth journey. Not only was she highly experienced, having attended around 400 births, but she was also warm, caring and knowledgeable. She reassured me that the decisions I had already made about the provider I was seeing and hospital where I would deliver were good choices, making me feel much better about the experience (since I had loved and was so comfortable with my provider and hospital before we moved and nervous about the new situation). She also recommended the hypnobabies birth class (which admittedly I would not have considered because of the name), as a wonderful tool to use during labor. Thankfully, I followed her advice and took the class, as it prepared me wonderfully for labor and birth. The second half of my pregnancy was not an ideal one, having been hospitalized for pre-term labor at 25 weeks and diagnosed with gestational diabetes soon after that. But Patti was always that voice of calm and reason, assuring me that I was still in control of my birth even with the given circumstances. I went into labor 3 weeks early with my water breaking in the early morning hours. My labor progressed so quickly that Patti had to meet us at the hospital only a few hours after that initial phone call. We were soon taken back to a room where I began pushing. Patti helped keep me centered, reminded me to relax my body, and coached me to make more effective pushes. My daughter was born 6 hours after my labor started. It was all such a blur. I am so glad Patti was there to also document my daughter's birth with pictures and notes. Those are items that we will treasure forever and we are so thankful that she took them for us. Patti is the best at what she does and we were so blessed to have had her with us.

Patti was very helpful and easy to talk to as we went through options for support ahead of time.

When I first went into labor, I contacted Patti right away. She gave us some great ideas and said she would be available for whenever we needed her. Our goal was to labor at home as long as possible and then head to the hospital. She suggested taking a bath to see if the contractions got stronger. Not only did they get stronger, but my labor took off from there. Patti came to our house to help with labor until we were ready to head to the hospital. My husband and Patti worked together for different positions, oils and ginger candies for the nausea, and deciding when to head to the hospital.

When we got to the hospital, the first nurse that took care of me was not very accomodating to my request to move where I wanted to move. Patti helped me to get a new nurse! I also asked for an epidural and was sure that I couldn't take it anymore. My husband didn't like seeing me in such pain and wasn't sure what to do. Patti knew that that was not in my birth plan and did exactly what I had asked her to do, which was to help me have a natural birth. She knew that I was farther along than I thought and helped me to get through those rough contractions until the nurse checked me again and I was at 10 cm. We delivered our baby girl (sunny side up) approximately an hour after we arrived at the hospital.

Patti was so supportive and was exactly what we needed to help us have an amazing natural birth!

With a doula by my side, my goal was to have a shorter labor and do no additional harm to my back. Patti listened with care in our pre-birth meetings giving guidance and suggestions. On birth-day she and one of her associates Abi Miles were incredible. With Patti and Abi supporting my husband and me, we navigated the labor process closely following our birth plan. They were literally hands on, helping me move into different positions to keep labor moving and massaging my back. My husband got to do his best work in supporting me and being a part of the labor every step of the way. Both Patti and Abi engaged the nurses and doctors with professionalism and gave us great peace of mind, freeing us to focus on getting baby here and not worrying about anything else.

At the most intense parts of labor Patti helped me focus on the finish line and believe in myself. She gently encouraged and kept me calm. Our 9 lb. baby boy arrived with an un-medicated birth. I could not have done it without Patti and Abi! From the pre-birth consults through labor and the post-partum visit our doula experience was outstanding. If you are even considering a doula, Indy Doula Associates is the place to go. They have business partners that do exceptional work supporting moms. Hiring a doula is the best pregnancy decision I made. 12/22/14
